Turning an annual salary into a pay period amount

An annual salary is a fixed yearly figure, but you’re paid on a schedule — weekly, biweekly, semi-monthly, or monthly. The “Show results per” option in the calculator converts your net annual pay into whichever period you choose:

  • Weekly — annual ÷ 52
  • Biweekly — annual ÷ 26
  • Semi-monthly — annual ÷ 24 (twice a month, on fixed dates — not the same as biweekly)
  • Monthly — annual ÷ 12
  • These are equivalent representations of the same annual calculation, not a different tax result — your total tax for the year doesn’t change based on how often you’re paid.

Biweekly vs. semi-monthly — don’t mix these up

    Key distinction
    • Biweekly = every 2 weeks = 26 pay periods/year
    • Semi-monthly = twice a month (e.g. 15th and last day) = 24 pay periods/year

Because 26 periods split your salary into smaller chunks than 24, biweekly paycheques are slightly smaller than semi-monthly ones for the same annual salary — but you receive two “extra” paycheques over the year on a biweekly schedule (in years with 26 full pay periods).

    Frequently asked questions

Does pay frequency change how much tax I pay overall?

No — your annual tax is the same regardless of how often you’re paid. Pay frequency only changes how that same annual amount is divided into paycheques.

How do I convert my salary to an hourly rate?

Select “Hour” in the “Show results per” dropdown, and enter your typical hours per week — the calculator divides your net pay by your actual annual hours.
